Autoimmune conditions are at epidemic proportions and going undiagnosed and mistreated by our current medical system.
What is autoimmune? It’s when your own immune system starts to attack some part of your body due to a case of mistaken identity. Obviously there is a bit more to it than that but this the simplest way to explain.
My own personal story is with the autoimmune known as Hashimoto’s which means my immune system is attacking my thyroid because it think it’s gluten. This is different to being gluten intolerant and sometimes where the confusion begins. Women are testing themselves via elimination diets to see if gluten has an effect on them but not feeling all that different except for maybe losing a little weight. The problem is that when the immune system is reacting to gluten its effects are much slower than if you had gluten intolerance. It can take your immune system up to 72 hours before it starts attacking the gluten invasion, so your symptoms can be quite delayed. For me if I have something with gluten in it, even the tiniest amount, I can feel quite normal for the rest of the day and even a little the day after that, however by the end of the second day or third, I will have a ferocious headache that travels down my shoulders and up my neck. Plus my brain is all foggy like I have the flu. So they aren’t the typical gluten symptoms of bloating and digestion problems but they are however a full blown attack from my immune system which takes a complete detox to remove again.
Why does autoimmune going undiagnosed?
The current blood tests referred on by your local GP only cover one particular working part of your thyroid. Generally the TSH is measured. The ‘normal range’ for this is currently being reviewed but even if it’s just a few points outside of low or high and still in the normal range often doctors don’t do anything further with the results. The problem is there are many more moving parts of the thyroid and the full function needs to be tested not just one small part. It doesn’t get requested because the full testing panel for your thyroid is not on the free list.
By not seeing the rest of the thyroid properties you miss the full scale of damage that is occurring to the thyroid due to the immune system attacking it. The other reason this is going undetected is because the antibody test is not on the free list so it very rarely gets requested.
Mainstream medical world sees Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune conditions as a life long diagnoses that are incurable and only treated with medication. This is entirely untrue and one of the sad realities that are causing many people to suffer unnecessarily with symptoms. An autoimmune disorder, speaking specifically in this case about Hashimoto’s version (just because there are so many) is caused through having leaky gut syndrome which allows particles of food to flow out into the blood stream causing the immune system to go on high alert and remove the offending particles. The problem is the immune system identifies your thyroid as being included as an offending particle because it resembles the same protein structure as gluten. A process known as cross-reactive gluten sensitivity.
This is why correcting the diet to avoid all inflammatory foods and supporting the healing of the gut lining is imperative to reversing this condition.
Of course there may be a need to support the thyroid back to health as well because it’s been copping a hard time from the immune system so the correct dosage of supplements would be required.
We need to become proactive with these conditions and doing a full autoimmune elimination diet is the best way to heal yourself and find out for sure what food you might be eating if you are suffering from inflammatory symptoms.
Many symptoms of hormonal imbalance can often be related to an underlying autoimmune condition. 98% of women who I have tested in my practice this year have tested positive to autoimmune conditions even after they have had the all clear from the GP. After treating the autoimmune and the thyroid correctly the symptoms of hormone imbalance are also going away. Finding the root cause is imperative to working with the body to find balance and accepting that gut health is the key to reversing conditions and living symptom free.
