Do any of the following statements sound like something you might say;
- I’m eating really well and doing everything I am meant to do but still can’t lose weight,
- I’ve tried everything and nothing works, I think I’m just meant to be this size,
- My mother and her mother were this size, it’s simply genetics and nothing works,
- I heard getting older you just keep putting on weight no matter what you do,
- When I lose weight I always end up putting more back on – it’s so frustrating
These are all very common phrases I have heard from clients and people generally in social media conversations. The biggest thing we need to recognize is that stubborn weight and continuing weight gain is more often than not signs of hormonal imbalance. Of course if you are eating poorly and making bad food choices this will have the obvious effect of weight gain but I am talking for most people who are doing there best and still getting no real results, hormones are the culprit.
So let’s take a look at the top 3 Hormones that will stop you from losing weight if they aren’t in check.
Hormone #1: Estrogen Dominance
All women are well aware of the hormone Estrogen, it is responsible for our breasts, hips and also things like lubricated joints etc. Men actually have estrogen too but it should be much lower than women although this can be a problem for some men who are our of balance also (that might be another post for the guys). Problem is when we are Estrogen dominant because high levels of estrogen will cause us to not only store fat but also create more fat from fat cells, so we actually become fat producing machines. Not good at all.
The fastest thing you can do to begin to lower estrogen is increase your vegetable intake. Or put a different way – eat more fiber. Fiber from vegetables will excrete estrogen from the body so it stops circulating and reproducing. If you aim for approx 35- 45 grams of vegetables per day maybe a little less needed for men and increase slowly as you feel comfortable, you will reduce estrogen and start to feel much better.
Hormone #2: Insulin Resistance
One in two Australians have some degree of diabesity, which is a new term for diabetes + obesity. Being overweight or simply having too much fat per weight ratio (so sometimes you don’t look overweight), will mean that your insulin will start to get out of whack and the cells start to become resistant to the signals. Once the relationship between insulin and your cells starts to deteriorate then your body will store more and more fat rather than using glucose as energy. Once insulin isn’t working your hormones start to get out of balance and it will become more and more difficult to lose weight.
A top tip you can start doing today is to include drinking filtered water with Apple Cider Vinegar added to it, (approx 2 tablespoons). Drinking this before a high carbohydrate meal will work as well as any prescription drug taken to regulate blood sugar AND it’s much better for you. Obviously there are many other things you can do to regulate blood sugar and improve insulin resistance but I can discuss that in another post later.
Just remember if your hormones are out of whack AND you can’t lose weight there is a very HUGE chances insulin one of the problems so you might as well start sipping on ACV + water today.
Hormone #3: Too much Cortisol
Cortisol is a natural reaction to stress in the body, but not just that, we do actually need it daily to get us ready for action. Problem is we are all way more stressed than nature intended and too much cortisol wreaks havoc on our body. In fact Cortisol actually makes your body STORE fat and it loves to store it in your belly region.
High levels of cortisol is linked to so many different conditions, with food addictions, sugar cravings and depression just to name a few. You can have your cortisol levels measured through saliva testing to see just how out of balance it really is so you can start to manage things better however you could do something immediately helpful towards cortisol by weaning off coffee for a few days.
Before you scream at me for even suggesting such horror – it doesn’t have to be forever. If you need to reset your hormones and get them back into a state of balance, then we need to give them a break and support them to heal. Taking a rest from caffeine will do that for you.
There are more things you can do for yourself – especially if symptoms don’t improve. You may need to look a little further into the hormone reset process. So don’t give up on yourself or your body, it just needs to get back into balance which might mean giving up a few favourite things for a little while but trust me you will feel amazing.
AND you are so worth it..
